Disana Waterproof Pad: Where to Use It and How to Care for It

Learn where a Disana wool waterproof pad works best, how to wash and lanolize it, and the common mistakes that shorten its life.

Quick answer

Use a Disana Waterproof Pad as a breathable moisture barrier under crib sheets, on changing pads, or in bed for older children, then hand-wash it in cool water with wool-safe detergent and re-lanolize every few washes to keep it water-repellent.

What the pad is (and what it is not)

Disana calls this item a Moisture Protection Cover, but it is not a diaper cover. It is a flat wool pad that blocks moisture while letting air circulate. That makes it useful anywhere you want a reusable, breathable layer between a wet zone and a dry surface—under a crib sheet, on a changing table, or under a toddler's sheet during potty training.

Because it is not shaped or elasticized, it will not contain a full diaper blowout or a large spill. Think of it as a surface protector, not a waterproof diaper cover.

Size and shrinkage: choose before you wash

The pad comes in two sizes: Small (50×70 cm, about 19×25 inches) and Large (70×90 cm, about 28×35.5 inches before washing). Disana notes that the Large size will shrink after washing. If you need the full stated dimensions, account for that shrinkage or size up when the pad will be washed frequently.

Measure your crib, changing pad, or bed area before ordering. A pad that is too small leaves edges exposed; one that is too large can bunch under a sheet.

Why wool instead of a plastic-backed pad

Wool absorbs some moisture and releases it as vapor, so it feels less clammy than a plastic sheet and can be reused after airing. The trade-off is care: wool needs gentle washing and periodic lanolizing to maintain its water resistance. If you want a wipe-clean surface, a plastic or PU pad is simpler; if you want breathability and less plastic, wool is the better fit.

How to use and care for your Disana Waterproof Pad

  1. Place it where moisture needs blocking: Lay the pad flat under a crib sheet, on a changing pad, or under a toddler's sheet. Smooth out wrinkles so it does not bunch. Check that the pad extends beyond the wet zone; edges that stop short let moisture wick to the sheet.
  2. Air it between uses: After a dry night or a minor damp spot, hang the pad to air dry before reusing. Do not fold it damp. If it smells stale after airing, wash it rather than masking the odor.
  3. Hand-wash in cool water with wool detergent: Use cool water and a wool-safe detergent. Gently squeeze the water through the pad; do not rub, wring, or machine-wash unless the care label explicitly allows it. Hot water and agitation cause wool to felt and shrink, especially the Large size.
  4. Rinse and re-lanolize regularly: Rinse thoroughly, then soak in a lanolin solution every few washes to restore water repellency. Follow the lanolin product's dilution instructions. Skipping lanolin makes the pad absorb moisture instead of repelling it.
  5. Roll, don't wring, and dry flat: Press out excess water by rolling the pad in a towel, then lay it flat to dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Hanging a wet wool pad can stretch it out of shape; flat drying keeps the size true.
